More than 50 lone young refugees who vanished shortly after coming the UK and while in the care of government agencies are still missing, based on figures obtained.

Many of the unaccounted minors came in dinghies or stowed away in the backs of vehicles and are thought to have been taken by smugglers. A specific county is often the area where they initially reach.

Official Data Indicates Alarming Statistics

Disclosed records has recorded 345 children vanishing from local care, with 56 of those remaining unaccounted for.

From 2021 and 2023, when temporary accommodations for children were run along with other sites in different regions, 132 children vanished from those two hotels. Of these, 108 were eventually recovered but 24 are yet to be found.

Between 2020 and August 2025, 213 children disappeared from care facilities for these minors, with 182 found and 32 remaining vanished.

Ethnic Composition of Vanished Minors

In both cases, minors from Albania were the biggest contingent to go missing, representing a full half the overall number from the hotels, 68, and more than a quarter from the welcome hubs, 65.

The second and third largest origins to have vanished from both places are Afghan nationals then Iranians.

"These figures are disturbing. Behind each number is a scared youth who will undergone serious rights violations before arriving in the UK looking for protection."

Advocacy representatives stressed that when representing children who have broken free after being exploited whilst vanished, they witness how their psychological and bodily well-being is permanently harmed by the exploitation they endure during this time.

"Even a single minor to go missing represents an complete breakdown of the state to safeguard the most fragile and exploited in their care. These figures are in the multiple hundreds."

Urgent Measures to Address the Issue

Specialists emphasized greater efforts are required to locate the missing children. "Minors have not opted to vanish. These children should be participating in activities in the park and getting ready for their exams, not servicing criminal groups in conditions we know involve being restrained, harmed and exploited, and punished by being denied nourishment."

Legal Changes and Ongoing Concerns

In late 2023, following a protracted judicial process relating to unaccompanied minor refugees vanishing from all designated facilities, the procedure of routinely accommodating children in hotels was ruled unlawful.

As an alternative, authorities pledged to strengthen security for these children by expanding the use of care facilities. After that judicial outcome an additional 44 children have gone missing from such locations, with 10 remaining unaccounted for and 34 found.

"Once a child does go missing, the threat that they are being mistreated rises substantially and they are definitely more vulnerable to exploitation and trafficking."

Officials also direct children to mechanisms and services to help address the danger of mistreatment in the UK, encompassing the government assessment process and the specialized protection program. "Despite this it is problematic to halt all children from disappearing."

Another spokesperson stated: "The safety and welfare of lone migrant youths continues to be crucial, and we take children vanishing very gravely. We persist in regularly review our procedures for new information if this takes place, providing appropriate details with regional law enforcement and local authorities investigating the matter."
