New York Jets Head Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Incident

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and feels certain the player will be OK after being shot in central New York early Sunday morning.

Glenn described that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during a recent discussion.

“What reassures me, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they are holding up and he is expected to recover fully.”

It remained unclear when Boyd would leave the hospital, where he is reported as in critical but steady condition.

“Not certain at the moment,” he added. “However, I can share, hearing him speak, his attitude was encouraging. And again, that puts my mind at ease, given his positive frame of mind and his words reflect that optimism.”

NYPD issued video stills Monday of an individual wanted in the shooting of Boyd. A motive for the shooting remains under investigation and officials stated it is unknown if Boyd was the intended victim. No one else was hurt according to reports.

The attack took place in the early morning on Sunday morning near MSG and the iconic square. Boyd, 29, was admitted to Bellevue Hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, police said. The assailant escaped.

Glenn shared Boyd has been in his thoughts “a ton” since learning of the incident. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse recently welcomed a baby.

“The first thing I thought about, he recently became a father,” Glenn noted. “I thought of his spouse, considering his child and I want to make sure that he’s OK. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There is a procedure involved, which I won’t get into, but It is reassuring that he will recover excellently.”

Boyd was inactive this season, his first with the Jets, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on August 18 with a shoulder issue that involved surgical repair.

He signed with New York as a free agent in March and was anticipated to become an important component of an improved special teams group under the coach and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a training camp practice on 2 August and was carted from the field.

Boyd has stayed involved with the squad during the entire campaign while recovering from the shoulder injury.

“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn stated. “Certainly, he attends every game. He is completely involved. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”

Boyd, a Texas native, played his first four seasons with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by the Vikings out of UT in the 2019 draft. He joined the Arizona Cardinals in last year and then joined Houston’s practice squad subsequently. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal for $1.6 million with the Jets in the spring.
