New Year's Revelers Advised to Dress Warmly with Snowfall Expected Across the UK
Weather experts are reporting a frosty beginning to the new year, with snowfall likely throughout a lot of the UK. Revelers have been told to dress warmly as sub-zero temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.
Celebratory Plans Go Ahead In Spite of Alerts
Edinburgh's renowned Hogmanay celebrations are planned to proceed, following last year's cancellation. This is in spite of weather alerts for snow in northern Scotland.
"A cold New Year's Eve evening for those partying, so extra layers will be needed," stated the Met Office.
Displays Under Clear but Frosty Skies
Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is expected to be suited to fireworks displays, with dry conditions and good visibility. Temperatures are due to be low, so warm wraps essential, said forecasters.
In more northern areas, skies will be cloudier, but this is not expected to affect visibility for viewing fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.
Widespread Weather Alerts for New Year's Day
Moving into Friday, weather warnings are in place across Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and most of the south-east of England.

- The public are advised to plan for delays for travel on the road.
- Hold-ups and call-offs are likely on trains and buses.
Readings Set to Fall Even More
Going into the new year, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are forecast to fall even more as wintry showers and strong winds are likely to hit the north of the country.
Around 10cm of snow is forecast to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the highest roads and hills.
Public Health Warnings Activated
At the same time, amber-level health advisories have been activated for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to stay active until noon on 5 January, with readings forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.
Authorities stated this signified the weather could to cause major effects across medical and care provision. This involves a potential rise in the fatality numbers among the elderly or unwell or those in the older age groups.
