Britain's boxing star will be upgraded to WBO heavyweight champion after the Ukrainian champion opted to give up his championship belt

This follows after the champion informed the World Boxing Organisation he would not engage in a obligatory title fight against Wardley

Boxing Organization's Position

The boxing organization confirmed that Usyk had "elected to relinquish his championship following careful thought"

The Ukrainian maintains the WBA, WBC and IBF heavyweight titles, having defeated Daniel Dubois at the national stadium in July to become a double undisputed champion

He initially achieved the complete unified champion in May 2024 by overcoming Tyson Fury, before vacating another belt shortly after and opting out of facing the required opponent

"Organization head Gustavo Olivieri described Usyk as exceptional in a official release"

"The organization offers its deep appreciation and respect to the Ukrainian champion, an undefeated, two-division WBO undisputed world champion"

"His achievements mark one of the most extraordinary and historic of the contemporary boxing period"

The WBO added that its institution will continue to support the champion and his camp"

Champion
Oleksandr Usyk is an Olympic gold medallist and perfect in his pro career

Title Reign

Usyk secured the WBO belt in two years ago by beating the British star and went on to successfully defend multiple times

In mid-year, the championship body required discussions for a mandatory defence against New Zealand's Parker, only for a back injury sustained by Usyk to cause the delay of the bout

Wardley's Rise

But Wardley, 30, took the interim title from Parker with a major surprise in the championship rounds at London's O2 Arena last month and was required to challenge Usyk before the end of September

The boxing organization hasn't formally announced the title change but his manager Warren believes it is a formality

"England has a fresh boxing champion and a emerging fighting personality"

"Among the most remarkable journeys I've seen in my 45 years as a boxing representative and I could not be more pleased for Wardley"

"Some huge fights ahead for next year as he maintains his title and establishes his place in the fighting community"

Wardley only began boxing relatively late, emerging from the amateur circuit and has had only 21 pro bouts
