An Account of Unexpected Generosity: When a Student Let Me Sleep on Her Dormitory Ground

Back in the year 2006, I traveled to the Australian capital for an admissions interview for medical school. I figured to arrange a place to stay after getting there, however upon reaching the city, a major event was happening and all the backpackers hostels and budget accommodation were fully booked.

Coming from the city-state of Singapore, the idea crossed my mind perhaps I could bed down in the terminal – but quickly found Canberra airport, in contrast to Changi Airport, is not open all night. With no idea how to proceed and feeling increasingly desperate, I hopped on a bus into town and started wandering towards a gaming venue, reasoning I might spend the night in a place that was open all night. Admittedly, this plan at my peak to succeed at an interview the next morning, yet, as a broke student, a pricey hotel was out of reach.

We could all use more folks who show such kindness.

Apparently, I appeared confused as a female student noticed me loitering in downtown and wondered if I was OK. I recounted my situation and without hesitation she said I could crash on the floor of her dormitory at the Australian National University – an ideal turn of events, given that my my medical school interview was scheduled for the next day. She went further by offering some food: a leftover filled rolls she had taken home her work shift. I was able to use the bathroom and a protected spot and safe for the evening.

With hindsight, I can appreciate the significant risk she accepted as a young woman inviting a male stranger who was a complete stranger stay in her room. Back then I was in my male privilege bubble and not even thinking to the potential danger. Now, as a father, I’m amazed she offered that help – yet deeply appreciative.

I didn’t end up study at the Australian National University, and I lost touch with that kind stranger again, yet her memory has stayed with me that incredible gesture of human compassion. My sincere desire is that the universe has repaid her generosity abundantly. Our society requires more people with such compassion.
